The Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) has served as a vital regional connector since 1969, operating 24/7 between the heart of Philadelphia and Camden County in New Jersey. As a key link between NJ Transit and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), PATCO not only facilitates seamless travel but also supports broader efforts to reduce air pollution, ease traffic congestion and drive economic growth. By offering parking for more than 12,500 vehicles, PATCO helps minimize the number of cars on the road, making it an essential part of the region’s sustainable public transit network.
CHALLENGE
PATCO’s underground stations experienced cellular dead zones, resulting in a significant disruption to commuters’ public transit experience. Supporting more than 5.5 million regional riders a year, PATCO’s underground stations required more robust cellular coverage to ensure seamless connectivity to support phone calls, text messages, checking emails, streaming and more.
SOLUTION
PATCO turned to Boingo to deploy a state-of-the-art, neutral host distributed antenna system (DAS) throughout six underground stations. High-speed, 5G cellular connectivity from T-Mobile complements existing Verizon coverage, ensuring riders can text, call, stream, email and use the full functionality of their mobile devices with ease. The result? A more streamlined, convenient and enjoyable commute.
